When Google launched its versatile smart speaker with a significantly better scope of ability, the standards we were familiar with were dramatically changed in the wake of the Google Home. With its ability to support to multi-user and voice recognition, the Echo has been scrambling to try and regain lost ground.

It seems that the frontline of this battle has been defined by user-driven benefits with the new technology. The suite of value-adds for the Echo user have seen inclusions such as voice calling to other devices, and notification sounds on your Echo. Both the Google Home and the Amazon Echo have made their presence known through offering convenience via a number of features.

Both the Amazon Echo and the Google Home are equipped with built-in high-quality microphones, which provide the user with a means to control the device with better accuracy than previous forms of this technology. The command is different for both as you would expect, The Echo recognizes the commands ‘Alexa’, ‘Echo’, and ‘Amazon’.

Whereas the Google Home, having come a long way from the early days of  Spiral 1 and Project Ara (Google Mobile smartphone) has different commands like ‘Hey Google’ or ‘OK Google’. Both execute quite smoothly as per the chosen command set by the user, in accordance with the specifications of the device.

One of the bonuses for Google Home users is that you can connect to Cromecast through the Google Home device which then allows you to control your TV via your Smart Phone. Alexa, as the assistant for the Echo goes, can integrate with Fire-TV, and work only with specific Fire-TV remote controls. This may give Fire-TV enthusiasts some confidence that the rumors of Fire-TV being shut down are not completely true.

As we consider the application and usefulness of these devices in our Google Home vs Amazon Echo snapshot, it is clear that if you are a Google Home user, you’ll have more versatility at your disposal. With Google Home, you can group multiple speakers to play media in multiple rooms in your house.

Sadly, for the Alexa fans, this is not the case, the Amazon Echo is quite limited here in that it can’t do this. However, in terms of games, the Echo does have more games and jokes, and it seems to be designed more to be used for fun than Google Home. If this is what you want, then the Amazon Echo will prove to be better than the Google Home with trivia games, and more simplicity than Google Home.

But if we look at Google Home for the strengths that it provides to support you as a personal assistant, it wins hands down. Google Home has the ability to learn as you use it, and it can access your Google Calendar, Google Maps and anything else in your Google account you grant access to.

As a value-add in your life it is much more equipped to support you, and therefore we believe that it easily beats the Amazon Echo, in this category as well as a few others.

Surprisingly, the Amazon Echo does give a degree of functionality through Alexa, however, this is comparatively limited, with the extent being weather information, your calendar, reminders and the like. Google Home seems to fall short in that you currently can’t update tasks that you have in your calendar which have changed, such as marking them as completed.

From a communications perspective, the Amazon Echo has recently added the capacity to call other phones, prior to this it was limited to other Echo devices. But with the Google Home from the first release you could call any phone. Google initially made it much easier to call anyone, so this is a big tick in the box for us in the Google Home vs Amazon Echo review.

As Google Home is integrated with IFTTT, it is clearly proving to be better than Alexa’s IFTTT, even though the number of recipes running for Google is currently lower than Alexa, they have seen a steady increase and are trending to surpass Alexa quite quickly. There is an ever-increasing range of applications and shortcuts appearing that work with both of these devices which makes for a continuously improving user experience.
